Merry Christmas, all! I hope everyone had a very blessed Christmas and was able to spend time with their loved ones. I am constantly reminded of how much the Lord has blessed me. My family and friends are incredible, and for that I am forever thankful.
As I sit here watching "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" and reflecting on the school year thus far (because those two go so well together?), I thought of something I have been meaning to share.
Math facts. My little ones this year came back from summer break really struggling with their facts. I had parents e-mailing nearly everyday asking what they could be doing at home to practice their math facts.I set out to look for options. I came across a resource from Lory Evans called PIG math. Let me tell you... my kids LOVE PIG math.
It is quick and effortless daily fact practice. It is also differentiated. Each child moves at their own pace. Did I mention it was quick? My students have gotten so good at this routine that from start to finish it only takes two minutes out of our math block. It's FABULOUS!
They grab their test from the pocket chart and head back to their seats.
Once each child has their test I say "hands up", they repeat, and that starts their practice time. They get 30 seconds to run through their set out loud. It's a loud 30 seconds while they all shout out their facts! After that thirty seconds is up, they grab their pencils and hold them in the air until I being their second 30 second time.
And that's it!
We track our progress on this chart.
They love seeing themselves make progress. I have seen quite the difference in their fact mastery since the beginning of the year. It's fast, it's easy, and it's effective! Check out Lory Evan's PIG Math packet by clicking on the above picture.
As I said before... my kiddos adore PIG math. They love reminding me of when it's time to get that practice in!
